Overcome my Distress & Sorrow ?

Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭116:7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Psalm 115 – 116

“Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him. But their idols are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell. They have hands, but cannot feel, feet, but cannot walk, nor can they utter a sound with their throats. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them. All you Israelites, trust in the LORD — he is their help and shield.” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭115:3-9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

  • How do we fool ourselves so easily? Do we honestly believe that god we made with our hand will save us? What we are really saying we are a god because we made a god!!! What are some god’s in our lives today? Our feelings, our car, our houses, our friends, … Will they save you in the end? Will you spend eternity with them ?

“I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came over me; I was overcome by distress and sorrow.

  • What is your anchor in life when things get really tough? Alcohol, drugs, something to easy the pain and make you forget or ignore the situation. Or do you run to God?

Return to your rest, my soul, for the LORD has been good to you.

  • You see you will only find rest for your soul in God. Did the other “solutions” really work for you?

What shall I return to the LORD for all his goodness to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD. I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people.” – Psalm‬ ‭116:1-3, 7, 12-14‬ ‭NIV‬‬

  • How can we show our thankfulness to God? Or should I say how can I make my wife radiant? It is just my being the best version of me when I am with that person!!! That which is not Godly I deny myself off. It’s like me when I was at varsity, (on my way driving to write a test) and feeling like I want to be in an accident so I don’t have to write the test. If I make an accident will the test go away? No, I still have to face it anyway. Pray and trust God He knows what He is doing, in the end it is His Story.

Prayer for Today

God truly You are my refuge in times of trouble. Help me always to make You my anchor and not anything else. My peace lies in You and You being in control of life. I still have to do my part in being righteous. Help me to envision what is the best version of me through Your scriptures today and live my life to make it an reality. Discarding the dross and clinging to the good. Solomon said he testes folly and that also seems to be meaningless. You are the only one that give my life meaning!!!

Thanks You for standing by me through times of trouble. For really carrying me through it. Lord I praise Your name. I pray that I will share Your goodness with people today, to make You known. You are the rock they are looking for. You have places eternity in their hearts, I pray that I might help them to find You. Love you my Lord and Saviour, my rest for my soul. Amen

“Praise the LORD. Blessed are those who fear the LORD, who find great delight in his commands. Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever. Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous. Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice.
They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the LORD.” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭112:1-5, 7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

If I fear God I am wise. How will I do that? I obey His precepts. I will also find great delight in His commands. How is my memorising scripture going ?

Psalm 109 – 110

“My God, whom I praise, do not remain silent, for people who are wicked and deceitful have opened their mouths against me;

they have spoken against me with lying tongues. With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause.

In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer.

They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship.

Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy; let an accuser stand at his right hand. When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him. May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership. May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.
May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may blot out their name from the earth. For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted. He loved to pronounce a curse— may it come back on him. He found no pleasure in blessing— may it be far from him.
May this be the LORD’s payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me.

But you, Sovereign LORD, help me for your name’s sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt.
Help me, LORD my God; save me according to your unfailing love. Let them know that it is your hand, that you, LORD, have done it.

May my accusers be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak.

For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them.” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭109:1-9, 15-17, 20-22, 24, 26-27, 29, 31‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“The LORD says to my lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”

The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath. He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth.” – Psalm‬ ‭110:1, 4-6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Prayer fot Today

Lord of my Lord I praise you this morning. The apostle’s quoted Ps 109 when they replaced Judas with Matthias. This is a really scary psalm Lord. It is intense what You will do to Your enemies who false accuse You.

They basically will wear their curses as a cloak, how intense is that and totally wicked (not good as we would say nowadays and have made sin good).

God I know how it feels to be falsely accused and it makes you insecure at times. When you want to do a good job people will see it as meaningless and a poor effort to cover their shortcomings.

God I do know that You uphold the cause of the righteous and fight their case. May it be to them what this Psalm prophesied.

The awesome thing is that they will be Jesus’ my Lord footstool. Praise God, Father I am glad that they are in Your hands and I will not pay retribution.

It really challenges me God that this guy was a guy of fasting and he saw himself as a man of prayer. Seems like he saw that as his weapons of choice, a truly spiritual man.

The challenging thing is also that this guy was a friend to his accuser still.
I pray that I might help the helpless and be kind to the broken-hearted.

Psalm 101-104

“I will sing of your love and justice; to you, LORD, I will sing praise. I will be careful to lead a blameless life— when will you come to me? I will conduct the affairs of my house with a blameless heart.

My eyes will be on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me; the one whose walk is blameless will minister to me.” – Psalm‬ ‭101:1-2, 6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“Hear my prayer, LORD; let my cry for help come to you. Do not hide your face from me when I am in distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly.
Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the LORD: “The LORD looked down from his sanctuary on high, from heaven he viewed the earth, to hear the groans of the prisoners and release those condemned to death.” So the name of the LORD will be declared in Zion and his praise in Jerusalem when the peoples and the kingdoms assemble to worship the LORD.
But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” – Psalm‬ ‭102:1-2, 18-22, 27‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“Praise the LORD, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust. The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children— with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts. The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all. Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will. Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the LORD, my soul.” – Psalm‬ ‭103:1-5, 8-22‬ ‭NIV

“Praise the LORD, my soul. LORD my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty.
and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind. He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants. He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.
You set a boundary they cannot cross; never again will they cover the earth.
The lions roar for their prey and seek their food from God.
All creatures look to you to give them their food at the proper time. When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are satisfied with good things.
When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground.
I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the LORD.” – Psalm‬ ‭104:1, 3-5, 9, 21, 27-28, 30, 33-34‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Prayer for Today

Lord You are truly everlasting!!! Amazing that the beasts of the field cry out for You to satisfy their hunger. So much more should we. You are the one who takes care of us, not the economy and  not the political party. (although that might be true for some) God my focus should be on You and to do Your will. I pray for the men that I spend some time with yesterday. I pray for their souls. May they thirst for You like the do for fun, beer, laughter, companionship and steaks. I am not worthy to be called Your son, but still You sent Your Son to die for me on the cross. As I need daily sustenance to stay alive physically, how much more do I need spiritual sustenance daily !!! Amen

God of Wonders

Todays verse

“They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.

But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High. They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.

Psalm 76-79

“You are radiant with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game. It is you alone who are to be feared. Who can stand before you when you are angry?” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭76:4, 7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. The clouds poured down water, the heavens resounded with thunder; your arrows flashed back and forth. Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked.” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭77:4, 11, 17-18‬ ‭NIV‬‬
“They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them. But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High. They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved. When the LORD heard them, he was furious; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel, for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance. In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe. So he ended their days in futility and their years in terror. But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues; their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant. But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes. Like their ancestors they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow. And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.” – Psalm‬ ‭78:11, 17-18, 21-22, 32-33, 36-37, 56-57,72 Niv

“Do not hold against us the sins of past generations; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need. Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake. Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.” – Psalm‬ ‭79:8-10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Wow scary scriptures!!! A comparison only a hunter will appreciate “more radiant than, mountains full of game”. Is God still God in your life or has He just become another god. Asaph wanted to remember God’s deeds and His miracles. It makes sense because when we are reverent before God we will fear Him and obey His teachings. When we forget we will keep on sinning, rebelling, willfully test God and what cause it the did not believe in God or trust in His deliverance. The question is do I trust God today or try to sort out my life in every way not looking to His deliverance. If keep on not believing we will end our years in terror and futility. Do I flatter God with my tongue? Is my heart still loyal obeying His word? Disloyal, faithless and unreliable goes together. What does it take to lead people; integrity of heart.

Prayer for today

Morning Father I do pray that my trust will be in You and Your deliverance. I think many times my trust is in the situation and how I can handle things and not in You. You keep the universe in place how much more my ant of a life. I pray that I will have integrity of heart and not think I can con you into thinking that I am sincere. You know my life from beginning to end, you created me. I am your pot that you for’ like the scripture says I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Amen

Psalm 60-63

“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.”

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭63:1-4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Isn’t this a heartfelt psalm and letter to God. How often do we tell God how we feel about him or does He only hear our problems, frustration and plea for goods that we do not have. David truly understands that he needs God and cannot function without him, a true reflection of what a marriage should be like. How often do you tell your wife that you need her and like in a movie “you complete me”. Is God’s love better than life for you, does it show up in your schedule, your meetings, your relationships, your money and your time spent with God? How is your praising of God?

Prayer

Lord truly you are the light of my life, I will praise you everyday singing in the car rather than put on the radio. On my bed at night I remember your. When I share the gospel with people I will long for you you and hope to introduce You to them. Please fill me with your zeal that I may represent you as a true ambassador of Christ. Help me to have a clear conscience by confessing my sin not just to You but people because that brings healing as the scriptures says. I long for you sincerely and look forward every day to spend time with you reading your love letter to me and praying and sharing with people what you mean to me. God help me to depend on your strenth and not to be self reliant because that is just pride in my heart. I love, love, love, love You and the gospel in a word is love. Amen

Do I please God?

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. (Romans 8:5-8 NIV)

Is Smoking a Sin ?

“Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” – ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭7:1‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Does smoking purify or contaminates your body ?

If I give you some water to drink and I tell you there might be a chance that you might be poisoned a little bit; will you drink that water ?

So the real origin of sin is lack of reverence for God, which is really just pride. You would rather do your will than God’s.

“You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”” – James‬ ‭4:4-6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Your pride makes you God’s enemy. Wow scary. Definately don’t want to be God’s enemy. Imagine living with God’s opposition !!! Sound like a tough life.

Lets look at what research shows

What are the fruits of smoking ?

Copy from NHS website – Click to read article

Smoking is one of the biggest causes of death and illness in the UK.

Every year around 100,000 people in the UK die from smoking, with many more living with debilitating smoking-related illnesses.

Smoking increases your risk of developing more than 50 serious health conditions. Some may be fatal and others can cause irreversible long-term damage to your health.

You can become ill:

  • if you smoke yourself
  • through other people’s smoke (passive smoking)

Smoking health risks

Smoking causes about 90% of lung cancers. It also causes cancer in many other parts of the body, including the:

  • mouth
  • lips
  • throat
  • voice box (larynx)
  • oesophagus (the tube between your mouth and stomach)
  • bladder
  • kidney
  • liver
  • stomach
  • pancreas

Smoking damages your heart and your blood circulation, increasing your risk of developing conditions such as:

  • coronary heart disease
  • heart attack
  • stroke
  • peripheral vascular disease (damaged blood vessels)
  • cerebrovascular disease (damaged arteries that supply blood to your brain)

Smoking also damages your lungs, leading to conditions such as:

  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which incorporates bronchitis and emphysema
  • pneumonia

Smoking can also worsen or prolong the symptoms of respiratory conditions such as asthma, or respiratory tract infections such as the common cold.

In men, smoking can cause impotence because it limits the blood supply to the penis. It can also reduce the fertility of both men and women.

Health risks of passive smoking

Secondhand smoke comes from the tip of a lit cigarette and the smoke that the smoker breathes out.

Breathing in secondhand smoke – also known as passive smoking – increases your risk of getting the same health conditions as smokers. For example, breathing in secondhand smoke increases a non-smoker’s risk of developing lung cancer by about a quarter.

Babies and children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of secondhand smoke. A child who is exposed to passive smoke is at increased risk of developing chest infections, meningitis, a persistent cough and, if they have asthma, their symptoms will get worse. They’re also at increased risk of cot death and an ear infection called glue ear.

If you smoke when you’re pregnant, you put your unborn baby’s health at risk, as well as your own. Smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of complications such as:

  • miscarriage
  • premature (early) birth
  • a low birth weight baby
  • stillbirth

Spiritual Approach

“Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?” – Romans‬ ‭6:16‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Does your smoking lead to death or to righteousness ?

You “belong” to the power you choose to obey…

“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” – 1 Peter‬ ‭2:11-12‬ ‭niv

Is smoking a sinful or Godly desire ?
Will you glorify God and see it as a good deed ?

How are you using your smoking to glorify God ?

Keep clear of the desires of your lower natures, for they are always at war with your souls.

“Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.” – Romans‬ ‭8:12-14‬ ‭NIV‬‬

When you smoke what do you fill yourself up with, God or your addiction ?

Why do people smoke outside ? Why don’t you share your smoke with your kids because it is good for you, it should be good for them ?

Is smoking good for you or bad for you ? If you believe smoking is good for you, do you encourage your kids to smoke with you ?

What are you sowing and what do you expect to reap ? Are you sowing to please your sinful nature or to be filled with the Spirit ?

“Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died. Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval. Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall. So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin”. – ‭‭Romans‬ ‭14:13-23‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Have you ever asked yourself why do you smoke ?

  • Opportunity to have a chat with ur friends or colleagues – Lack conversatinal skills
  • Peer pressure because I want to fit in with my friends / colleagues to be cool and be accepted by them – Have a low self-esteem
  • I want to die and smoking is a passive way to achieve that
  • I like wasting money and paying for cigarets is a means to that
  • To ease my stress – Don’t have a positive way to deal with ur problems and using smoking to escape their lives
  • I cannot stop because I am addicted -No self-control
  • It is fun and keep you awake – You have a misguided belief that killing yourself and causing you harm in ur future is a good thing
  • It keeps your weight down
  • It makes you look badass – Have a low self-esteem
  • It annoys people you hate –
  • Psychologically Dependent
  • Socially Integrates you – You look to hang out with the popular crowd
  • You are Mirroring Others – Lack Confidence, Not following Jesus
  • You enjoy smoking, it’s like using heroine – Need a drug to prop you up
  • Experimentation /Adventure – Juvenile tendencies
  • To act older
  • To feel relaxed
  • To think properly

There’s no way around it. Smoking is definitely the worst habit one can have. However, people would rather enjoy a cigarette instead of taking care of their health.
Moreover, people are not fully aware of the detrimental effects of smoking. However, if you are not concerned about the future, at least, focus on your present and try to live healthy.

1. God’s Creativity (Read Genesis 1:1-27)
