“Baptism isn’t important. That is what Paul said.” – Fake News – 4 of 6

Is it really what Paul said? “Baptism is not important”?

Did you ever read that passage in context?

Did you know he was talking about pleasing God rather than following men?

Did you know that people were bragging about who they got baptized by?

17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power – 1 Cor 1:17

Baptism without faith is but a swim. Faith in baptism forgives your sin. It is like eating cake before you baked it. Like we’ve seen in previous studies faith is a process.

Do you know they were all baptized???

“Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul? ” – 1 Cor 1:13

So if baptism was not that important, why were they all baptized?

Did Paul get baptized?

16 ‘And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.’ – Acts 22:16

Paul himself got baptized for the forgiveness of his sin. Why would he not advocate that?

He was brought us as a Pharisee; in todays terms he studied Theology. He did not have faith in Jesus, pretty much like a Athiest in regards to Jesus.

If Ananias came to him and told him to get baptized (before he saw the light from heaven and got blinded), Paul would most probably have him killed; like he did with Steven who he got stoned to death. He was on his way to Damascus to do the same thing.

Let’s look at Paul’s journey before he became a Christian. (Acts 9Acts 22)

  • He had a personal meeting with Jesus shining a bright light on him first and Jesus asking him why he was persecuting him.
  • After he lost his sight (most probably because of the bright light) he was escorted by hand to Damascus where he fasted for three days.
  • Then he was told in a vision that Ananias will come and restore his sight.
  • Ananias in his turn seeing a vision was told to go see Saul (Paul) and restore his sight and that Saul will be filled with the Holy Spirit.
  • Ananias baptized Saul, if baptism wasn’t important he would not have got baptized!

Let’s have a look why Paul emphasized preaching the gospel first above being baptized.

“10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought. 11 My brothers, some from Chloe’s household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. 12 What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”; another, “I follow Apollos”; another, “I follow Cephas”; still another, “I follow Christ.”

13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? 14 I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. 16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel — not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.” – 1 Cor 1:10-17

Paul does not diminish the importance of baptism here.

In context he makes the point that he does not want people following men (denominationalism).

He mentions baptizing several people in the passage.

Again why would he baptize people if that was not important to him?

People would not get baptized if they did not hear Paul’s preaching.

It’s like that saying: “You cannot pull the cart before the horses”, there is a process involved.

There is a great movie made about Paul’s life, “Paul, Apostle of Christ (2018)”.

Prayer for Today:

Morning Lord. Thank you for forgiving my sin at baptism and giving me your Holy Spirit. Thank you that my life changed the day I got baptised to my new life like it says in Romans six. Lord I do understand that if someone do not hear the gospel first they would not get baptized because there would be no motivation to do it.  I thank you Lord that you came to save me. Help me to have conviction about baptism and the function thereof in my life. Amen.

Name 5 Scriptures on Salvation / Going to Heaven – Summary – Light vs Darkness

Can you name 5 scriptures on Salvation or to go to Heaven? (Write them on your notes on ur phone now and check after you have done the study)

Can you interpret them right?

Ok don’t peek now!!!

  1. A chosen people – Light or Darkness? – 1 of 13
  2. Seperated – Darkness – 2 of 13
  3. That don’t impress me much – Darkness – 3 of 13
  4. Scary movie – Darkness – 4 of 13
  5. Pleasure vs Terrible Times – Darkness – 5 of 13
  6. Know the good, but doing the bad – Darkness – 6 of 13
  7. Your Wages? – Darkness to Light – 7 of 13

  9. My Personal Jesus – Light – 9 of 13
  10. The Tipping Point – Light – 10 of 13
  11. A New Life – Light – 11 of 13
  12. Prerequisite No.1 for Salvation – Light – 12 of 13
  13. Prerequisite No.2 for Salvation – Light – 13 of 13

Ok so how did you do with the 5 scriptures?

So what would be your plan of salvation?

What scriptures / arguments would you use to proove your point?

Is it even in the Bible?

Prayer for Today:

Lord I remembered the first time I read these scriptures. I was so excited that I understood the Bible and how it fits together. You have an amaizing plan for me. If I have any doubts I will study your scriptures, even do topical Bible studies.I know  this is the tipping point of my eternal life and I will treat it with the priority that it deserves. Help me to find a real disciple that can help me through the process to put your word into practise and become part of Your family on earth! Amen.

Prerequisite No.2 for Salvation – Light – 13 of 13

Thinking of that perfect job

Have you spoken to a recruitment agent who specializes in that area?

What will it take to get that job? Another degree? Some extra specialization courses? Practical experience in certain fields of study that my current job is not offering?

To climb the ladder of success in your work you have to jump a few hurdles.

Why would it be different in attaining salvation through Jesus Christ?

Let’s have a look at another prerequisite for salvation; faith.

“For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority. In him you were also circumcised with a circumcision not performed by human hands. Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead.” – ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:9-12‬ ‭NIV‬‬

We know that the Jews had to undergo circumcision to become part of God’s family and to recognized as part of the Jewish nation.

There is a circumsision you need to undergo to get rid of the self ruled by the flesh, a circumcision done by Jesus Christ himself.

How does that happen?

The verse says you have to be buried in baptism.

What is that all about?

We remember from the previous study that baptism is a spiritual participation in the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Why is crucial here; the raising part?Iit is that prerequisite we were talking about.

You are raised through your faith! Not someone elses faith like your parents or your spiritual friend who is really excited for you to get baptised.

Faith means you trust the person you entrust yourself with.

Here you need to understand what happens at baptism to get baptised.

If you do not understand what happens spiritually at baptism you are merely taking a swim.

So unless you believe that your sins are forgiven and you receive the Holy Spirit a baptism, your baptism is null and void.

Why is this important?

The Bible says that without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb 11:6)

To go to heaven we need to please God. So that is why it is soooo important!!!

So the question here is did you have faith in what happens at baptism?

For me, I got baptized as a baby which means nothing according to our study because I did not have faith and could not be a disciple. I also got baptised as an adult because I believed it is the right thing to do, not really believing what happens at   baptism. You can say I believed I need to do the right thing, but doing the right thing without believing is useless. It is like believing the diet makes you loose weight but not believing you should change your lifestyle about what you are eating. I believe that is why diets don’t work for the majority of people.

Then finally I believed in what happens at baptism and got baptised.

May this be true for you today!

Prayer for Today:

Lord this might seem like and insignificant point but I know that it totally defines my faith. Help me to get baptised for the forgiveness of my sins and to receive the Holy Spirit. I know that my sinful nature gets taken away at baptism and I become a part of God’s family. What an exciting proposition to have for my future and eternity! Amen!

The Tipping Point – Light – 10 of 13

Malcolm Gladwell in his book “The Tipping Point” defines a tipping point as “the moment of critical mass, the threshold, the boiling point”.

Ever had a moment like that in your life.

They say there are 3 crises in your life that significantly impact on you:

1. You loose your job.

2. You get devorced or loose a loved one.

3. You move house.

I knows what it feels like. In Desember of 2016 it was like a tap that was closed, I lost the 3 projects I was working on. That meant I let go of 2 staff members.

Eventually we had to move state because I could not find work ther any more.

Getting a job in another provice turned our to be one of those bad jobs you inherit that is 18 years behind in their progress. My boss was not qualified as a professional so that is why the job was in such a bad state of disarray. So I resigned without having another job to go to. Eventually I found a job that paid a tenth of my previous salary that we only lived on the bread line.

Then there was my father that passed away last year. It was very sad and we had a good relationship.

For me it is much better now, having a good job.

But my brother had a similar experience, getting devorced, loosing his business due to fraud and actually immigrating back from Germany to South Africa. He said he has lived his live, living with my brother he has no ambition left to get a work or to move on in life, he has lost hope. He almost committed suicide when he came back.

What is your turning point in your life that gave you that anchor in your life to weather the storms?

I believe this is my anchor.

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off — for all whom the Lord our God will call.”

40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. – Acts 2:38-42

First of all Peter says here, Repent (Greek = to turn). Now for some people when you ask them to change kick with both their feet against you and have a bad attitude about it. To use a example, on the sigaret pack stands that you might get cancer. But what do people do? The think it is more beneficial to be in with their friends than get cancer. What will you think of me when I knowingly drinks a little bit of poison on a daily basis? You’ll think I am mad and stupid!!! I think that is what God also think. Repentance, good thing or bad thing? I’d say good.

Next thing Peter tell us to get baptized (Greek = to be immersed). Now what is the sinificance of that? We will have a look in the next study.

The third thing Peter explains why we should be baptised, our Sins are forgiven. Therefore this is the point in time a person is saved. It is like a free get out of jail card in Monopoly. Would you like to keep staying in jail or allow Jesus to bail you out?

The final thing Peter says concerning your salvation is that the Holy Spirit is given to each who responded — power to live as God commands. Ever felt powerless to change your life? How about getting a Red Bull spiritual energizer to give you the boost?

Now you know how to get right with God and what has been amiss in your life. I do not think I am better than my brother, I am just better off because of God’s Holy Spirit living in me!!!

Prayer for Today:

Wow God!!! I can get out of jail, yahoo!!! Thank you for the opportunity to be able to change and get rid of that spiritual and physical cancer in my life. Help me Lord to make the right choice for eternity!!! Amen.

A chosen people – Light or Darkness? – 1 of 13

We have often played this game. Two side are chosen with two captains. Now if you get chosen to be the captain that is the best. Then the captains select their team, if you are one of the first say two choices of the captain; you feel awesome. If you are one of the last; you know that people see you as weak in that kind of sports and you don’t feel that great about yourself.

To define Chosen is; the one who is the object of choice or of divine favor : an elect person. Selected or marked for favor or special privilege.

Wow special priviledge, I like that!!!

Chosen the movie has this line. Harvey Keitel: “There is something that is in us, that can make us do extraordinary things”. Jordan Renzo: “They say you were sent by God” Luke Mably :”I am just an ordinary man”.

Let’s see who is chosen by God.

9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. – 1 Pet 2:9-10

There are always two sides with God.

Darkness                                              Light

Not a people of God                             People of God

No Mercy                                                 Receive Mercy

Lost                                                           Saved

Going to Hell                                          Going to Heaven

Not a Christian                                      Christian

Not a Disciple                                         Disciple
Every person is either in the darkness or the light. There is no twilight zone.

Where are you?

If you say you are in the light, what do you base your facts on?

Your timeline might look like this:

1970-Born and get Baptised as a baby.

1975-Become aware of God

1976-Go to Sunday school

1985-Pray Jesus into my heart to get “saved” (sinners prayer)

1987-Do church catacism to get accepted by the church. Pray Jesus into my heart just to make sure.

1988-Get confirmed by the church. Take communion for the first time.

1991-Became a disciple. Get baptised as an adult because it is the right thing to do, compelled by others faith.

1996-Get Baptised for the forgiveness of my sins and receive the Holy Spirit believing that myself.

But what is God’s plan of salvation?

Can you name 5 verses that confirms your plan of salvation that you followed according to the Bible?

Well we will have a look at what God’s plan of salvation is.

Prayer for Today:

Morning Father. Thank you for a new day. Help me to be sure of my salvation. Help me to make sure I was saved according your plan of salvation and not someones opinion that will make me go to hell. I know that I can sincerely believe that I am saved but can be sincerely wrong. Help me to base my salvation on facts not fiction. Amen.

What are you looking for? – Coming of the Kingdom of God and of Heaven – 4C of 4

Are you like Bono of U2And still haven’t found what I am looking for“?

What is there on earth that pulls our heart strings? Money, power, popularity, travel, etc.

Do these things really fulfill us?  Nooo, then movie stars will not commit suicide or overdoze on drugs. They would have lived fulfilled lives and be happy.

So what is the alternative? What should we be looking for according to God?

Let’s have a look at Jesus’ first speech and what He had to say.

33 “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” – Mat 6:33

Let’s answer the other two questions of the 6 we asked in the beginning?

5. Is it important to go to church? Yes very!!!
What priority must seeking the kingdom of God (His church – Remember it is an eternal church here on earth) take in your life according to this verse?
It says seek first, so above all else your first priority every day should be to seek God’s Kingdom first.

Are you seeking the kingdom first?

If not, why? Don’t you think it is important to seek God’s kingdom first?

Well God does.

Maybe your priorities is more focussed on the world and not on God.

Is God your first love or a spare wheel?
It also says you should seek God’s righteousness, which mean that your life must be exemplary in God’s eyes.
You cant just seek the kingdom but your life stinks it out.
It also says that all things will be given to you as well. What is that all about?

Well Jesus was talking about food, clothing, etc in the previous verses. Basically He was talking about your daily needs, so God is not distant ito your needs.

The last questioncan be very controversial if you are not serious about the truth.
6. Is it important to which church I go to?
Some people might say; as long as you are happy in your local congregation. Let me illustrate. We all love to drink Coke. Sometimes when you go to the green grocer you get these cheap knockoffs. Well it is something to drink, but not the real good stuff.
Are you a knockoff guy / girl or do you like the real, good quality stuff?
The question begs; that if my church is not like the church of the Bible, is it then the real church? Is it the real deal? Do I settle for second best?

You decide, remember your eternity is at stake. That saying bird of a feather flock together. You become like your 5 closest friends. They are your yardstick for life; who you go to for advice. Are they disciples, are they bringing you closer of further away from God? Some things to ponder.

It all boils down to your character. Do you have conviction about the truth or do you live the lie? Or do you love the darkness more than the light? (Jn 3:19)

Prayer for Today:

Lord I pray that my heart will be inclined to seek your kingdom first. Help me to throw off everything at hinders and the sin I so easily fall into? Help me to be a man of conviction who loves the truth and lives by it every day! Amen.

Keys to the Kingdom – Coming of the Kingdom of God and of Heaven – 3J1 of 4

Why use keys?

We want to keep some things which is valuable to us in and others out; thereby safeguardin out things we consider precious.

We inherited the key concept from Babilon and Egypt using wooden keys. Steel keys were designed by the Romans.

Keys are also a gateway linking one dimesion / room to another.

Watching Smurfs with my daughter, Papa smurf created a wormhole / gateway between their world and ours to escape Gargamel the evil one.

Using the specific key opens the gateway to enter the other dimension.

The same here in the Bible.

19 “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” – Mat 16:19

So here Peter was given the keys to the Kingdom by Jesus. So, he is going to tell us how to get in. We need to pay attention to what Peter says.

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.” – Acts 2:14

Here is Peter standing up on Pentecost when the Kingdom was ushered in. Here he explains to them what is happening in the Kingdom.

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” – Acts 2:38

So what was Peters message to enter the Kingdom; when it was ushered in.

So the Keys is as follow:

  1. Repent – From our sin.
    Get BaptizedFull immersion into water.

Why should you repent & get baptized:

  1. For the forgiveness of sin.
  2. And to receive the Holy Spirit.

Amazing that God does not leave us hanging; but direct you how to enter His Kingdom.

So now that you have the Keys to the Kingdom, what will you do with them?

Have you repented and got baptized for the forgiveness of your sin and received the Holy Spirit?

The real question is: Do you believe in the Kingdom of God?

Prayer for Today:

Wow God now I know what the keys to the Kingdom is. Help them to implement them in my life. Amen

Look within!!! – Coming of the Kingdom of God and of Heaven? – 3I1 of 4

Message in a Bottle“, what a great movie. This girl Robin Wright running on the beach finds a bottle with a message in it. She finds a love letter from Kevin Costner to his lost love, missing her. She tracks him down and fall in love in a picxturestique little town by the sea.

But it was really the mesage in the bottle that started her journey. It is not really the bottle that has the value but the message inside.

The message in the bottle, changed her whole life.

Jesus had the same message for us!!! His message was that the Kingdom is inside of us.

20 Once, having been asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, 21 nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.” – Luk 17:20-21

So you might ask what is the Kingdom inside of us?

37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”- Acts 2:37-38

So it was not really a change from the outside that changed their lives, the physical kingdom. It was the change from inside, receiving the Holy Spirit at baptism and forgiveness of their sins. It is only the change from inside that brings the permanent change with the help of the Holy Spirit.

So the clue / prophesy became true in that the kingdom within them in the Holy Spirit living in them. (Rom 14:17, 1 Cor 12:7)

Prayer for Today:

Lord truly your Holy Spirit living in us make it possible for us to live according to your word. Help us to search for your kingdom on earth to live the full live you promisedto us. Help us to remember it does not help trying to change things by ourselves, but through your Holy Spirit working in us. Amen.

Reborn – Coming of the Kingdom of God and of Heaven? – 3H of 4

Ahhhh, a new addition to the family!!!

There is the nine months anticipation if he of she will be fine, most by the mother. If it is your first one the father experiences that fear and wonder what it will be like to be a dad.

The grand parent is just so excited to become granpa and grandma, play with their new doll and be able to give them back to their parents when they start crying.

Just so in the kingdom. There is that fear to change and is this really worthwhile. The wonder about how will you future pan out?

Verses for Today:

1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.”

3 In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

4 “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”

5 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.'” – Jn 3:1-7

So here we can see that you cannot even see the Kingdom of God if you are not born again.

So Jesus says: to enter the Kingdom of God, you have to be born of the water and the spirit.

Let’s see what Peter said when the kingdom started on Pentecost day.

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” – Acts 2:38

When your sins are forgiven you are a new man? It is after you repented and got baptized. So baptism is not just a sign but a spirtual reformation. You are spiritually reborn after you get baptized.

Prayer for Today:

Lord listening to the birds in the morning is always so peaceful. They sing to your glory every day. Help me to have that song in my heart that I sing to you every day. Lord if I haven’t been reborn according to your word, I will most probably not spend eternity with you. Help me to be humble toward your words and your plan for my life, if I am not I don’t believe you have my best interests at heart. Help me to study the bible vigorously if I do not agree with other peoples opinion to find out the truth for myself and not just go on someone else opinion. Help me to take responsibility for MY life and base my beliefs on the Bible and not opinions about the Bible. Amen.
