Jerusalem – Coming of the Kingdom of God and of Heaven? – 3C1-2 of 4

Have you ever wanted to go on holiday to that favourite city? Like London, Paris, Orlando (Florida) or Los Angeles (Hollywood). You were quite excited and could not wait. Well today we have something of the sort.

The Jews were waiting for the coming of the kingdom for millenia’s.

Let’s first look at the clue / prophesy:

Verse for Today:

Many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.” The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. – Is 2:3

The clue / prophesy said that the Kingdom will start in Jerusalem.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. – Acts 2:5

So here in verse one to four the Holy Spirit is poured out and we know that the Kingdom has come when that happens.

We know that the lasts days was when Jesus and the Kingdom came according to our previos clue / prophesy.

Now they are in Jerusalem, which was also predicted where the Kingdom will come.

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.”
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” – Luk 24:44-49

Here Jesus reminds the disciples what He has preached earlier. He also direct them to what the signs was; that the Kingdom will come; beginning at Jerusalem. So when you read the heading it is after Jesus was crusified and risen from the dead. The Kingdom clearly did not yet come when Jesus died on the cross and has risen to life. But to understand this scripture we have to understand the significance of the time period that Jesus was saying this clue / prophesy.

Jesus here was speaking in the time period after He was crucified and before He assended into heaven. This has bearance on yje next scripture.

In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3 After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” – Acts 1:1-5

Here it was a period of fourty days when He talked on??? No kidding, the Kingdom of God.

And what did He say in the previous passage??? In verse 46 He told us that He had to suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, that happen at this point when He was talking to them.

Next He said that repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached, this has not happened yet at this point. It was another clue about the coming of the Kingdom.

Jesus also said it will start in Jerusalem, fulfilling what the clue / prophesy said.

Then in verse 49 He prophesied that they will be clothed with power from on high; which we know was the Holy Spirit and has happened at this point in verse 4.

In verse 5, Jesus also prophesied that they will be baptised by the Holy Spirit, that happened here.

I hope you get the just of it. A lot of point forward and going back to see what was prophesied.

Prayer for Today:

Lord you predicted and Isaish prophesied that the Kingdom will start in Jerusalem, which it did. There is now so many clues / prophesies that has come true that it is overwhelming and amazing at the same time. When I start putting things together it all makes sense. It is like planning my wedding; and then on the day it all starts coming together. You normally are excited and stressed at the same time, real mixed emotions. Help me to be exited about your kingdom the way you want me to be, because then I understand the reality of it. Amen.

The Words of God – Living and Active – 2 of 9

Living

Being alive; having life; active; lively; vigorous; producing life, action

Active

Having the power or quality of acting; causing change; communicating action or motion; given to action; constantly engaged in action; energetic; diligent; busy

Heb 4:12-13 : For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

It sounds energetic!!!

I picture a guys doing the ironman race.

Do we take it that it is the words of God?

When you go to speak to the president your whole posture and behavior changes due to your respect for the person who he is.

How much more do we value and respect what God says.

How alive and applicable is what God says in your life?

Well I think it starts with finding out, ie to read it consistently.

The next thing : It compares God’s words with a sword.

Sword : An instrument, instrumentality used in fighting or hunting.

It main function is to cut. Applying it here it has a spiritual, not physical implication.

It will cut your heart. It will expose your spiritual intestines, doing an operation on your heart.

It will cut out the cancer that is killing you.

Question : Are you allowing God’s word to cut you?

When the word cuts you it lays bare everything in your life. Someone says it is like you have a TV screen at the back of your head and everybody can see what you are thinking. Scary or not? 🙈

Doing your taxes is most probably one of the worst things you have to do in your life. That is for me.

Giving account forces you to be responsible with your life.

How are you making yourself accountable every day?

God’s word is powerful!

It will change your life for eternity!

May you be blessed by it.

Is 40 : 8 – The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.

Prayer:

Dad, thank you for giving me your message that changes my life for the better. Help me see it is good for me. Help me to be accountable. Amen

Psalm 109 – 110

“My God, whom I praise, do not remain silent, for people who are wicked and deceitful have opened their mouths against me;

they have spoken against me with lying tongues. With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause.

In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer.

They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship.

Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy; let an accuser stand at his right hand. When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him. May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership. May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.
May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may blot out their name from the earth. For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted. He loved to pronounce a curse— may it come back on him. He found no pleasure in blessing— may it be far from him.
May this be the LORD’s payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me.

But you, Sovereign LORD, help me for your name’s sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt.
Help me, LORD my God; save me according to your unfailing love. Let them know that it is your hand, that you, LORD, have done it.

May my accusers be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak.

For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them.” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭109:1-9, 15-17, 20-22, 24, 26-27, 29, 31‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“The LORD says to my lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”

The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath. He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead and crushing the rulers of the whole earth.” – Psalm‬ ‭110:1, 4-6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Prayer fot Today

Lord of my Lord I praise you this morning. The apostle’s quoted Ps 109 when they replaced Judas with Matthias. This is a really scary psalm Lord. It is intense what You will do to Your enemies who false accuse You.

They basically will wear their curses as a cloak, how intense is that and totally wicked (not good as we would say nowadays and have made sin good).

God I know how it feels to be falsely accused and it makes you insecure at times. When you want to do a good job people will see it as meaningless and a poor effort to cover their shortcomings.

God I do know that You uphold the cause of the righteous and fight their case. May it be to them what this Psalm prophesied.

The awesome thing is that they will be Jesus’ my Lord footstool. Praise God, Father I am glad that they are in Your hands and I will not pay retribution.

It really challenges me God that this guy was a guy of fasting and he saw himself as a man of prayer. Seems like he saw that as his weapons of choice, a truly spiritual man.

The challenging thing is also that this guy was a friend to his accuser still.
I pray that I might help the helpless and be kind to the broken-hearted.

Psalm 107-108

Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains, because they rebelled against God’s commands and despised the plans of the Most High. So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities.
Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.
Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.
They sowed fields and planted vineyards that yielded a fruitful harvest; he blessed them, and their numbers greatly increased, and he did not let their herds diminish. Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow;
Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the LORD.” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭107:1, 4-13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 28, 32, 37-39, 43‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“My heart, O God, is steadfast; I will sing and make music with all my soul. Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. Save us and help us with your right hand, that those you love may be delivered.

Give us aid against the enemy, for human help is worthless. With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.” – Psalm‬ ‭108:1-6, 12-13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Prayer for Today

Morning awesome Father. I am truly humbled when I read your Word and liok up to the stars. Waking up in the morning I can hear the birds sing in the bushveld. It is so great to have companionship with people in the gospel who really is our spiritual family.
Thank you Father for calling me to be a disciple through your Word. When I head to be a christian I had to be a disciple (Mat 28:16-20) I was sad that no one told that to me before 26 years ago. Father it seems like a lifetime and is. Help me to grow in my faith and character so that I might be blameless in your sight. That I may live a life worthy of the gospel by which I am saved.
My friend and I had such a great time last night reaching out to people for our Bible discussion. It was his first time doing evangelism. I can still remember the library at Tukkies where I invited my first person to our Bible discussion. It was truly fearful and challenging, but you helped me become a real disciple.
I do pray for those who do not yet know you Father. I pray that we might have the courage to share our faith with them and persevere to help them become your disciples. The scripture does say in Mat 28 to make them your disciples, baptize the disciples and teach the disciples to obey.
Help to be obedient to that scripture every day and that we will have faith. We know that faith comes from hearing the message (Rom 10:17)  help us to have great bible study and pray using the Lord’s prayer as a framework.

Yoh love You Lord. Amen and Amen

Psalm 94 – 96

“The LORD is a God who avenges. O God who avenges, shine forth.

But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge. He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God will destroy them.” – Psalm‬ ‭94:1, 22-23‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if only you would hear his voice, “Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,

For forty years I was angry with that generation; I said, ‘They are a people whose hearts go astray, and they have not known my ways.’ So I declared on oath in my anger, ‘They shall never enter my rest.’  – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭95:6-8, 10-11 NIV

“Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary.

Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness; tremble before him, all the earth. Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns.” The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.

Let all creation rejoice before the LORD, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness.” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭96:1-3, 5-6, 9-10,13 Niv

Prayer for Today

Father shoe, You are God and what you decide stands. The Israelites kept going astray even while you showed them your miracles. In your oath you send them to hell because they did not want to repent. I had a vivid dream last night where I struggled, but God you are the one who works in our hearts to keep us close to You. Father being falsely accused is not nice, I dont know what it is like being falsely accused and being condemned to death because of it. It is like I said yesterday to the bus driver, there is situations in the world and then there is God. The the guy on God’s side will win in the end. Help me to cling to you and not see the waves of the sea going up and down. I am in your life jacket that will take me to the secluded island where God’s and His people live. Amen

Psalm 89

“I will sing of the LORD’s great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations.

The heavens praise your wonders, LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.

In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him.

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.

Remember how fleeting is my life. For what futility you have created all humanity!” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭89:1, 5, 7, 14, 47‬ ‭NIV‬‬

How we see God greatly determines our commitment to Him, like the one guys said “How big is your God, is he bigger than your problem?”. Do I look for the good in God? Do I remember His wonders and what He did for His people? Does he deserve my praise? How often do you sing to God? If it does not come out of your mouth it dies not come our of your heart.

Would you say you greatly fear God? I think fear or healthy respect shows up in our obedience. We seek to please God and make plans to do so. Is God your first priority in your schedule. How much time do you fit God and His work into your schedule? If you were to give yourself a point between one and ten, what would it be? Are you happy with that number?

Todays Prayer

Holy Father I praise your name this morning. As I listen to the bushveld birds singing it is truly amazing how they sing to You every day!!! May my voice reverberate like theirs every morning. May my schedule reflects my fear and respect towards you. May the decisions I make glorify Your name. Amen

Psalm 80 – 83

“Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us, that we may be saved.” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭80:3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“You shall have no foreign god among you; you shall not worship any god other than me. “But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.” – Psalm‬ ‭81:9, 11-12‬ ‭NIV‬‬

““How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. “I said, ‘You are “gods”; you are all sons of the Most High.’” – Psalm‬ ‭82:2-4, 6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“Cover their faces with shame, LORD, so that they will seek your name.” – Psalm‬ ‭83:16‬ ‭NIV‬‬

When God makes His face shine apon us we are saved. Make me think of people that has a near death experience, they always see this bright light and then have a total serene experience being in paradise… So if we do not listen to God we do not submit to him, so you can go to church and be all religious and not do what the Bible says and think you are right with God, but are you really. Who do you think you are fooling. God in the end give us what we want, if it is to be a spiritual man then that is what you will become. If it is loving the world and everything in it, then that is what you will become. So it is really easy to see what you love, it will be evident. What is my attitude about the weak, do I go out and help them on a regular basis. How would I want other people to react when I am in a difficult spot? Go and do likewise. When we serve the God of the universe we are His sons, and yes that does make us in a sense mini gods without the attitude. Sometimes God has to put us in a difficult situation before we cry out and seek His face.

Prayer for Today

Amazing what the scripture says o Lord that we are gods because we worship You and You are our God, it is like the scripture says the son will inherit the fathers estate when he dies. Just in this case You will not die and we will live with you forever. Amazing Dad that analogy of the rope on the stage, our life on earth is like the first centimeter and we want to fight and fuss over that first centimeter but we do not see the kilometer rope lying on the stage of life that will be our eternity. So we are really short sigted and dumb if we just live for this world. Help me to see Your face and really be enlighted. I did a seeking God study with my friend in Lephalale tonight and know if he decides to seek You with all his heart he will find You like your word says. Then he can live for eternity with You. I pray God that his heart will be responsive. Amen and Amen.

God of Wonders

Todays verse

“They forgot what he had done, the wonders he had shown them.

But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High. They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved.

When the LORD heard them, he was furious; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel, for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance. – Psalm 78:11,17-18,21-22

Psalm 76-79

“You are radiant with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game. It is you alone who are to be feared. Who can stand before you when you are angry?” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭76:4, 7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“You kept my eyes from closing; I was too troubled to speak. I will remember the deeds of the LORD; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. The clouds poured down water, the heavens resounded with thunder; your arrows flashed back and forth. Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind, your lightning lit up the world; the earth trembled and quaked.” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭77:4, 11, 17-18‬ ‭NIV‬‬
In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe. So he ended their days in futility and their years in terror. But then they would flatter him with their mouths, lying to him with their tongues; their hearts were not loyal to him, they were not faithful to his covenant. But they put God to the test and rebelled against the Most High; they did not keep his statutes. Like their ancestors they were disloyal and faithless, as unreliable as a faulty bow. And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.” – Psalm‬ ‭78:11, 17-18, 21-22, 32-33, 36-37, 56-57,72 Niv

“Do not hold against us the sins of past generations; may your mercy come quickly to meet us, for we are in desperate need. Help us, God our Savior, for the glory of your name; deliver us and forgive our sins for your name’s sake. Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Before our eyes, make known among the nations that you avenge the outpoured blood of your servants.” – Psalm‬ ‭79:8-10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Wow scary scriptures!!! A comparison only a hunter will appreciate “more radiant than, mountains full of game”. Is God still God in your life or has He just become another god. Asaph wanted to remember God’s deeds and His miracles. It makes sense because when we are reverent before God we will fear Him and obey His teachings. When we forget we will keep on sinning, rebelling, willfully test God and what cause it the did not believe in God or trust in His deliverance. The question is do I trust God today or try to sort out my life in every way not looking to His deliverance. If keep on not believing we will end our years in terror and futility. Do I flatter God with my tongue? Is my heart still loyal obeying His word? Disloyal, faithless and unreliable goes together. What does it take to lead people; integrity of heart.

Prayer for today

Morning Father I do pray that my trust will be in You and Your deliverance. I think many times my trust is in the situation and how I can handle things and not in You. You keep the universe in place how much more my ant of a life. I pray that I will have integrity of heart and not think I can con you into thinking that I am sincere. You know my life from beginning to end, you created me. I am your pot that you for’ like the scripture says I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Amen

“Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.

When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.
When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.” – ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭73:1, 16-17, 21-22, 25-28 Niv

“It is God who judges: He brings one down, he exalts another.” – Psalm‬ ‭75:7‬ ‭NIV‬‬

God expects us to be pure in heart, fully committed to Him, but so many time we disappoints Him. Worldly people might have wealth and a good life on earth, but that really is the test; will we be obedient to God in this life? I might think that arrogance will get me what I want like most worldly people do, but remember God is still in control He will look after you. When we look at things from a worldly perspective we will envy the wicked and become like them. As Asaph had said when he got into the sanctuary, then only he understood their final destiny. How much time do I spend with God to etay close to Him and understand things from a spiritual perspective? We are worldly when we aregrieved, embittered, senseless and ignorant.

It is truly good to be close to God !!!
It must have been truly hard when there was no prophet in Israel for 400 years. Would you stay faithfull to God even in the tough times?

Prayer for today

God almighty truly you are God who created heaven and earth. As I look at your creation I marvel at what you have made! I saw some hedgehogs (Or shallow pigs if directly translated into english) and a little Oorbietjie buck yesterday, I heard a fish eagle cry over the dam in the North West. How amazing that was. Driving on a ball of magma that hangs suspended in space circling a fiery ball of radioactive mass that is circling a black hole in the middle of nowhere, truly astouding. Your thoughts o God is truly not our thoughts. We always try to explain what you have made or try to fathom the meaning of all this. We havent even gotten to the closest planed that is in our solar system, although we have big plans. Help me just to humble myself every day and stand amaized at all your wonders. Loie Einstein said: Either everything is not a miracle or either everything is. I vouch for the latter. I pray that I will always be able to see things from a spiritual perspctive. Help me to stay faithful to you even when everything seems to go wrong and the whole world seems to be against you. Help me always to get input from spiritual men and confess my sin, because I really only sin against you o Lord. I pray that I will love people with the love of the Lord. Amen

“When we were overwhelmed by sins, you forgave our transgressions. Blessed are those you choose and bring near to live in your courts! We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple.”

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭65:3-4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

  • Do you know why you are overwhelmed? Yes it is sin, doing what I want and not what God wants. No wonder. You see closeness to God is always a choice, what will your deeds reflect today about your faith? What would you qualify as good things? Material possessions or being with God?

“If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;”

‭‭Psalm‬ ‭66:18‬ ‭NIV‬‬

  • Struggling with the same sin over and over? Dont I cherish that? Do you feel God is not listening?

Prayer

Morning Father. I come this morning before you humbled most times by my sin and lack of cherishing you over the world. I pray that you will always be my first priority in my life. I pray for our country that it might live in peace, so that we might glorify you and live peaceful lives. Jesus thank you for dying on the cross for me, I am truly an undeserving sinner that has been forgiven and can stand with confidence before you Lord. I pray for my new friend that he might be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth and spend his eternity with you. So true that scripture that we will have many troubles in this world (my computer and printer) I did not anticipate but God with your strength I will overcome. Help me God to love your church and encourage them daily. I pray for our move that it will go well and that we have chosen the right company. I pray for my wife to complete not one but two tenders today and if it is your will that we will get it. I dont know your plans but I do know they are good, help me to keep on trusting you even when it hurts. Love you my Lord.
